Sergio Luis Escalona Rodriguez (born on August 3 1984) was a Venezuelan professional relief baseball pitcher who was a part of Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Philadelphia Phillies (2009) and Houston Astros (2011) and is currently pitching for the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (VPBL). In March of 2012 The Astros confirmed that Escalona will be undergoing Tommy John surgery because of the ruptured ligament in his ulnar collateral region of his left elbow. The elbow will miss the 2012 season.

Escalona made his major league debut on May 17, pitching a scoreless inning and striking out one batter against the Washington Nationals. Escalona was appointed a free agent by the Phillies following 2003. He was a part-time player for the Phillies for about 24 months. with the Venezuelan Summer League Phillies, which he managed the score of 4-5 between 2005 and the year 2006. The pitcher pitched for 107 innings, and struck out 105 batters in both seasons. He was elevated in the year 2007 as a player for The Williamsport Crosscutters, the Lakewood BlueClaws and the Clearwater Threshers. At Williamsport Escalona, he was a starter in seven games and posted an 2-2 record with an 7.57 Earned Run Average (ERA). A record of 1-4 and a 4.15 ERA in Lakewood was not enough to keep his being promoted to the next level. In Clearwater the pitcher pitched just one game in which he only allowed one hit and one run in his one start.

The Phillies sent Escalona back to Lakewood for the 2008 season. He posted a record of 5-1 in his 28 appearances as a relief pitcher during his debut professional season as a bullpen pitcher. He racked up two saves while accumulating the 3.43 ERA. The stats led the Phillies to elevate them to the Reading Phillies, where he played in 15 games. The team lost one game however, he recorded an 2.22 ERA in 15 appearances with 29 strikeouts (90 in total across both levels in the year 2008). Escalona was a participant during the 2009 Arizona Fall League as a part of the Mesa Solar Sox. Escalona was a 14-game participant with Reading during 2009 registering 10 saves over 13 games that were completed. He pitched 16 batters in 17 1/3 innings, with an 2.12 ERA. Due to the need for an extra player in their bullpen the Phillies purchased Escalona’s contract with Reading and elevated Escalona into an official position with the Major League club on May 16, 2009.
