Almaguer began his career at his former club Angeles de Puebla, where he played in 27 matches and scored 3 goals. After one season at Angeles Almaguer was transferred to Puebla and spent three seasons with the club. In 1989, Almaguer moved onto Queretaro FC, he appeared in 35 games and scored 11 goals. In 1991-96, Almaguer was part of Tigres and also played in the club Correcaminos UAT for the 1994-95 season. In this season, the Invierno 1996 season, he switched into a defender following his time as a striker during the first nine seasons during his playing career. In his debut season in defense, Almaguer played with Puebla He played in 35 games , scoring only two goals.

The 28th of June, 2005 Almaguer made a public announcement of his decision to retire and ended his career of 18 years.

In January 2015, Almaguer won the 2015 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Jamaica with the Mexico U-20 team also qualifying them for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand. In December 2015, Almaguer was released from his duties with the Mexico U-20 national team.
