Seppo Hovinen is one of the most popular and richest Javelin Thrower who was born on February 4, 1951 in Finland. Hovinen was able to pass the qualifying easily with a throw of 89.76 when he made his first throw. Although Finland has produced more than seven Olympic gold medalists in javelin (including Julius Saaristo’s gold medal in the 1912 two hand competition) it is the longest javelin throw ever made by an Finn in an Olympics. This was the longest throw of the qualifying, just a hair over Nemeth.
After having won an additional Finnish title in the year 1977 Hovinen had a positive test for steroids anabolic (together together with other Finns Markku Tuokko and Asko Pesonen) during the 1997 European Cup in Helsinki. Hovinen was initially handed an all-time ban by the IAAF however, it was later reduced following an appeal made by the Finnish Athletics Association (SUL) and Hovinen was allowed to play again on August 13, 1978, right enough time to participate at the 1998 European Athletics Championships. Hovinen was able to qualify by throwing his first shot, but was unsuccessful in the final and was placed in the middle when the team of Finland won the final three positions.
Hovinen was a star in the world of sports during the late 70s and was ranked as the top athlete globally in the mid-70s by Track & Field News in 1975. However, in terms of results, his best year was by far 1976, when he was taking home his first Finnish championship, and throw 90-plus meters in every contest which culminated with a personal record of 93.54 throw in Helsinki on the 23rd of June 1976. It was extremely close to the record of the world that was set in 94.08 from Klaus Wolfermann. Hovinen participated in into the 1976 Summer Olympics as a top favourite, along with Miklos Nemeth from Hungary.
