Sentayehu Ejigu Tamerat (born 21 June, 1985 from Debre Markos, Amhara Region) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner that specializes in the 3000 and 5000 meters. She competed for Ethiopia in the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Outdoors, she took home her first race in the IAAF Diamond League at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix. She improved her 5000m timing to 14:28.39 minutes during the Meeting Areva, recording the second-fastest time of this year, just behind Vivian Cheruiyot. She was the winner of the 3000 m event at the Herculis competition in Monaco with an time of 8:28.41 which was the fastest time of any other outdoor athlete this season. She took home her second major gold medal in the course of the 2010 African Championships in Athletics, winning the 5000m bronze, just behind Cheruiyot as well as Meseret and then ended the year with the bronze medal from Africa at the IAAF Continental Cup in 2010. She opened her 2011 indoor season at the Aviva Indoor Grand Prix and improved her 3000 m best to 8:30.26 minutes, raising herself up to fourth on the all- time indoor lists. A road debut over 10 km followed later that month and she pipped Dire Tune at the line to take the World’s Best 10K in Puerto Rico. She performed well on the 2013 IAAF Diamond League that year, finishing second at the Shanghai Diamond League, FBK Games, Bislett Games and Meeting Areva. In the 5000 m final at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics she finished just outside the medals with a fourth-place finish.
A leg injury ruled her out of 2012 and also much of 2013. A win at the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women in a personal best 31:33 minutes in October 2013 seemed to indicate a return to form. She made her half marathon debut in Delhi that December, but her time of 1:12:02 hours left her out of the top ten in the high calibre race.
In the end, she narrowly missed out on winning medals during the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships and the 2009 World Championships, she made her debut in 2010 with bronze medals won in the African Championships in Athletics and World Indoors. She won the silver medal during the 2010 IAAF Continental Cup.

Sentayehu was a champion at the international championships. She made her debut during the 2001 World Youth Championships in Athletics and won her bronze in 1500m. Then she switched her focus on longer distances and participated in the 2002 IAAF Golden League circuit, with a best 3000m time of 8:48.30 minutes in the Weltklasse Zurich age of 17. She qualified for the 2002 IAAF Grand Prix Final and was seventh at the time. Sixth place at the Junior race of the 2003 IAAF World Cross Country Championships was a big help in guiding the Ethiopian women win the title of team captain and the fellow Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba took the race. She improved her 3000-meter speed record to 8:46.51 in 2003, but she was not able to compete in the 2003 IAAF World Athletics Final resulted in a seventh-place finish.
Her 2004 season was crucial in her career. She cut her 5000 m time substantially to 14:35.18 minutes, and earned an opportunity to be part of the Ethiopian Olympic team. In the 2004 Athens Olympics the 19-year-old placed 10th in the women’s 5000m final. Despite her impressive performance however, the year was a strain on her body when she was diagnosed with an ongoing problem with her calf and heel that hindered her running. She completed an indoor 3000m personal record of 8:46.67 minutes during the 2005 Boston Indoor Games, but her outdoor season slowed down because she was not able to make it to the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. She proved her indoor prowess in the next year, and finished fourth in the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships, getting even faster in time to 8:43.38 minutes. Her injuries continued to affect her performance, and the sudden passing of her younger sister the month of October 2007 caused her to put her career in limbo. She was married to Berhanu Alemu, a fellow running enthusiast, and began returning to full-time professional sports in 2009.
Sentayehu dramatically improved in 2010, putting her history of injury behind her. She improved her 5000 m indoor best to 14:46.80 minutes and set a mark of 9:12.68 for the two miles. At the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships she devised a plan with Meseret Defar to thwart the Kenyans in the 3000 m and the Ethiopians succeeded, with Meseret winning the title and Sentayehu taking the bronze – her first international senior medal.
