Seiko Matsuda (Song Tian Sheng Zi , Matsuda Seiko, born on 10 February 1962) was a Japanese pop singer-songwriterand is famous as among the top well-known Japanese idols during the 1980s. Because of her popularity during the 1980s, and her lengthy career, she’s been called”the “Eternal Idol” by the Japanese media. Seiko previously held the record for the most popular hits in the year 1983 until the year 2000 (broken by the band B’z) and also for the solo artist (broken with Ayumi Hamasaki on June 6, 2006). Seiko was the final performer on Kouhaku (Red Black Music Battle) both in 2014 as well as 2015. It was the highly regarded NHK New Year’s Eve music show that she appeared 21 times (up until 2017). Matsuda was wed three times. Her wedding was to actress Masaki Kanda from 1985 until 1997. Their only daughter and son, Sayaka Kanda, is also a singer.
Matsuda attempted to break into the North American market with an English- language, self-titled album in 1990. She managed to score a hit – “The Right Combination”, a duet with boy band New Kids on the Block singer Donnie Wahlberg. The album sales were mediocre, and her follow-up Was it the Future failed to generate significant sales. In 2002, however, Matsuda’s English dance hits “All to You” and “Just for Tonight” managed to reached the Billboard dance chart at No. 8 and No. 2, respectively.
Her second husband, Hiroyuki Hatano, was a dentist to who she was married from 1998 to 2000.

When she was in 1983 Seiko had a romantic relationship to singer Hiromi Go. While there was speculation of a possible wedding, Go’s strict values would have demanded Seiko to quit her singing career and concentrate on raising her family instead. Momoe Yamaguchi, Japan’s top female idol in the 1970s, was a follower of the same path, however Seiko had ended her relationship to Go instead. Seiko’s departure from the norm established a standard for Japanese women of the 1990s and 1980s to keep their careers going after they got married.
Matsuda began writing her own songs. She wrote the lyrics at first in 1983 when she released her first single “Chiisana Love Song” (lit. “Small Love Song”) in 1983. It was then followed by her first written track “Canary”. The music and lyrics on the album Baby’s Breath were written by herself. The album was her first entirely self-produced album.
Matsuda held the record for the most number-one singles (25) and most consecutive number-one singles (24) on Japan’s Oricon charts for 12 years, from 1988 to 2000. Both were surpassed by B’z in late 2000. She held the record for the most number-one singles (25) by a female singer for 18 years, from 1988 till 2006, when Ayumi Hamasaki’s “Startin’/Born to Be…” became her 26th single to top the charts. Matsuda’s held the record for the most consecutive number-one singles (24) by a female singer and any soloist for 22 years, from 1988 to 2010. It was broken by Hamasaki’s “L” in September/October
- Matsuda also held records for the most top-ten albums (50) and most number-one albums. Both records have since been broken by Hamasaki. Matsuda was the first artist to have a single and an album debut at No. 1 on the Oricon Chart in the same week. So far, this has only happened three times.
