After graduating from high school, Newcomb was accepted into The University of Hartford. As a freshman on Hartford’s Hartford Hawks baseball team in 2012, Newcomb started nine games before suffering an injury that ended the season. His first win in college was an inning of no-hitters against Yale. He ended the year with a win-loss record of 2-4 with an 4.17 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 45/3 innings. As an incoming junior in 2013, his team played thirteen games in a row, finishing 5-4 with an 3.75 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 72 innings.
