Tremaine and Peter Goldreich, correctly predicted that shepherd moons were responsible for Saturn’s thin F rings and the rings that were thin on Uranus in 1979. In 1979, the Saturnian moons Prometheus and Pandora were first discovered in 1981. Shepherding moons were observed within Uranus rings in the year 1986. Tremaine co-authored this book Galactic Dynamics with James Binney and James Binney, which is frequently considered the standard reference in the field. It has been quoted more than 3000 times in scientific publications. Tremaine together with his collaborators with colleagues at University of Toronto, and collaborators at University of Toronto, showed that comets with short periods originate from the Kuiper belt. Tremaine is believed to have suggested an idea that this apparent “double nucleus” of the Andromeda Galaxy was in fact one ring of red stars.

In 1990, Tremaine was awarded the Rutherford Memorial Medal in Physics by the Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada for “his outstanding contributions to the field to [sic] astrophysics, particularly his spectacular success in predicting the properties of planetary ring dynamics and the extraplanetary objects that control them”.
