Meyer initially began posting Basic Instructions on his LiveJournal account in 2003 and in 2006, began posting the strips on its own website, basicinstructions.net. The strips were published every week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Each comic had four panels within grid. Each panel usually contained instructions along with the typical comic illustrations. In June of 2015, Meyer announced that he was going to stop the publication of Basic Instructions, and would begin re-running old comics. The basic instructions were based around an “how to” topic seemingly drawn from the everyday for example “How to Lie for Recreational Purposes” or “How to Win at Monopoly Without Losing a Friend” Then, they addressed the topic in a often humorous or unexpected way. The characters comprised Scott Meyer himself and representations of people he had contact every day including his wife, boss, and his closest friend. The author has claimed in interviews that some of the characters were based off of real people.

The year 2015 saw the launch of a brand-new series called The Science Fiction book Master of Formalities. The story takes place in the future of the future, in which the planets are controlled by the noble house. The novel is focused on the planet Apios that is controlled by the gracious House Jakabitus, which is fighting a bloody battle against the evil Hahn Empire. Because planets have vastly diverse cultures, different formalities are employed to ease communication and to ensure the proper order.

The first 5 books are available in paperback, as kindle ebooks, as unabridged audiobooks, and on CD, performed by Luke Daniels, published by Brilliance Audio. Book 6 was initially exclusively released only as an audible audiobook with the paperback and ebook released on 6 December 2019.
