Helland was a student at the his high school at Westfield and was introduced to Lou Barlow. They founded the Massachusetts-based hardcore punk group Deep Wound in 1982. J Mascis joined the band after responding to their ad asking for the position of a “drummer wanted to play really fast”. While playing bass guitar for Deep Wound, Helland formed Outpatients along with his Vis Helland. They came out with The Basement Tape in 1983. The Outpatients also were part of the Western massive hardcore scene, and performed on stages with other bands such as Husker Du, Battalion of Saints, Crucifix, The F’s and GBH. Deep Wound broke up in 1984 “Scott… went in the Outpatients full time.” The Outpatients performed on across the East Coast of the US, Canada and Argentina throughout their 13-year run before disbanding in the year 1995.

Helland came back to the world of instrumental rock through His Never End the Rocket Century album released in the year 2017. It was conceived as a multi- cultural mix of the classic Ramones album Rocket to Russia and End of the Century, the Acoustic (guitar) is a pulsing sound of punk rock but his riffs blend with a range of sounds between Krautrock to flamenco to spaghetti western, a mashup of. Helland has released six videos off the album, including the album’s title track”Never End the Century’ in which the singer donned a spacesuit and wandered through Los Angeles.

In the year 2004, Helland reunited with his old Deep Wound bandmates for a performance in The John M Greene Hall in Northampton, Massachusetts. In June 2013, they reunited to sing “Training Ground” at the Governor’s Ball in New York City. Recently, Helland and his bandmates performed with each other in the year 2018 in Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts in the same year that the other part members of Deep Wound, J Mascis and Lou Barlow’s group Dinosaur jr were opening for the Foo Fighters.

In January 2019 Helland and Stephenson’s cabaret rock duo Frenchy and the Punk released a video for the song Lanky Bell Bottoms from their forth-coming album Hooray Beret.
