However, he is most well-known for his films, Crary initially came into the attention of the public in the late 1990s, as a hip-hop turntable, mixtape deejay, and occasionally a producer, under his stage name of DJ S.T.R.E.S.S. In the same time frame Crary was an accompanying act on tour for artists such as De La Soul, Jungle Brothers Smif-n Wessun, Heltah Skeltah along with Chuck D of Public Enemy. Additionally, he released a series of self-produced mixtapesthat are notable for containing some of the first appearances by artists such as El-P, Mos Def, and Eminem and original freestyles performed by The Roots, KRS- One, and Jeru The Damaja. As being a part of the Universal Zulu Nation and an associate with The Native Tongues, Crary was involved in the conscious movement in hip-hop.
Crary was on the jury for the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival alongside Alan Cumming, Whoopi Goldberg, Darren Arronofsky, Tom Wolfe, Damon Dash, and others.
In 2007, Crary directed the music video for the song “Story Goes First” by the Israeli band Katamine. The video starred Kurt Feldman of the indie pop band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.
In May 2008, Crary’s film, Kill Your Idols, was named on Black Book Magazine’s list of ‘Iconic and Influential Music Documentaries’, alongside such films as Dig!, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco, 1991: The Year Punk Broke, Meeting People Is Easy, and The Devil and Daniel Johnston. In May 2011, the film was also included on Nylon Magazine’s list of ‘Top Music Documentaries’.
The year 2005 saw Nokia asked Crary director of the documentary Perdu Dans La Ville, made entirely with Nokia 6682 Imaging Smartphones.

The debut film of director Christopher Crary, Kill Your Idols, is a tribute to such notable art punk and no wave groups as Sonic Youth, Swans, DNA, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Suicide, Black Dice, Gogol Bordello, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars among others. The film was awarded the prize for the best Documentary during the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival and was later screened at more than fifty international film festivals before it was released theatrically in the year 2006. The film was purchased to distribute across North America by Palm Pictures and for distribution in Europe with Minerva Pictures/RRO Videos and in Japan through Uplink. Kill Your Idols was also licensed for television from Showtime along with Sundance Channel.
Crary’s work is displayed at many art and museums across the world. The work of Crary has been exhibited by the Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona as well as the Musee of Art contemporain de Montreal and in the Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center in New Orleans, the Pera Museum in Istanbul and the London Institute of Contemporary Arts. The year 2005 saw the release of Sight and Sound’s Stephen Dalton characterized Crary’s experimental videos to be “short meditative loops” that “often deliver a koan-like punchline.”
In 2006, the Belgian graphic design agency Kidnap Your Designer chose its name as a reference to Crary’s film Kill Your Idols.
