Kawata was a student of Tatsuro Suzuki. He earned her bachelor’s degree from Tatsuro Suzuki in 1974. He then earned the master’s in the year 1976, and his doctorate degree from Osaka University in 1979.

He is currently Director for the Photonics Advanced Research Center. From 2002 on, Kawata works in collaboration with RIKEN as the Chief Scientist for the Nanophotonics Laboratory. Kawata is well-known for his research on nanophotonics (study of interactions between photons and nanostructures). He has been a part of the community through a variety of publications, inventions and conference organization in areas like near-infrared spectrum, near-field optics, laser-scanning microscopes and biophotonics. laser nanofabrication as well as signal recovery.
