Sascha Pohflepp (January 30 1978 – 17 June 2019,) was an German designer, artist and writer who’s work focused on the role that technology plays in helping affect the world, usually working with other scientists and artists.
In the year 2015, Pohflepp began his doctoral work in collaboration with Benjamin H. Bratton in the PhD Program in Art History, Theory and Criticism with a focus on the area of Art Practice within the Department of Visual Arts at the University of California, San Diego. In the fall of 2018, he was promoted to candidacy by conducting dissertation research on a brand new theory called “post-rational design”, which connects discourses about the inhuman and the theory of assemblage developed by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari and a new understanding of the concept of Anthropocene. The research has been influenced in part by his involvement as a graduate student in the specialization in anthropogeny at the Center for Academic Research & Training in Anthropogeny (CARTA) located at CARTA, the University of California, San Diego and was an Annette Merle Smith Fellow and collaborated with Anthropologist Pascal Gagneux.
The work of his has been shown in a variety of international exhibitions, such as talks to Me: Design and Communication between People and Objects at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; Grow Your Own the Life After Nature at The Science Gallery in Dublin Hyperlinks Design and Design at The Art Institute of Chicago and New Order in The Mediamatic Factory in Amsterdam. He was awarded two Honorary Mentions at the VIDA Art and Artificial Life Awards and was an Eyebeam resident in 2013. He was also a finalist in 2015 when he was nominated in The Berlin Art Prize.

born in Cologne, Pohflepp received his certificate from the Berlin University of the Arts in 2006 under the supervision of media designer and artist Joachim Sauter, after studying as a guest in the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs (ENSAD) in Paris along with Brice Dellsperger . The year 2009 was the time he graduated with the Masters of Arts in Design Interactions from the Royal College of Art in London, UK, where he collaborated alongside Anthony Dunne & Fiona Raby, Noam Toran.
As a designer and artist Pohflepp explored the ideas in works such including Growth Assembly (2009, with Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, illustrations by Sion Ap Tomos); Spacewalk (2017); Deep Unlearning (I) (2018, together with Chris Woebken); and The People who (2019).
His essay “Living Machines,” co-authored with Sheref S. Mansy, is part of the 2017 book, Synthetic Aesthetics: Investigating Synthetic Biology’s Designs on Nature published with MIT Press.
