Saranya Ponvannan (born 26 April 1970) born Sheela Christina Raj is a well-known South Indian film actress who has primarily been seen as a lead actress in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam language films , as well as a few Kannada films that speak Kannada. Saranya first made her appearance in the lead role of Mani Ratnam’s Nayakan (1987) and continued to appear in leading roles between 1987 and 1996. After a sabbatical of eight years and a return to film, she re-entered the industry as a character actress, specialising for “mother of the hero” roles.
After a long absence from film production, she came back in 2003’s Tamil film Alai with Raghuvaran as Silambarasan her mother. Since then, she has been in a variety of films as a support roles, including Raam, Thavamai Thavamirundhu and Em Magan in the mid-2000s.
In 2014, she launched Design & School of Fashion Technology (DSOFT), a fashion institute at Virugamakkam, Chennai.
She has also played the role of villain in Achamindri (2016).
Following her wedding at the age of 25, she gradually stopped acting. In 2000, she played the leading role in the comedy TV show, Veettukku Veedu Lootty. She then accepted a few roles in various other projects. In 2006 she appeared on the family-drama series Mugangal that was telecast in the UK on Sun TV.

Saranya has made Saranya made her Tamil debut on Mani Ratnam’s movie Nayakan as the female leading lady opposite Kamal Haasan in 1987. Saranya made her debut Telugu appearance in the 1988 film Neerajanam and then her Malayalam debut came a year later in the film Artham with Mamooty as her co-star. In 1996, close to the final stages of her career as a lead actor, she made her debut in Kannada cinema with Appaji.
