In the process of completing Look Both Ways, Watt was diagnosed with cancer. Her next movie My Year Without Sex was released in the year 2009.
Watt came back to The Victorian College of the Arts School of Film and Television to teach animation, and involved in the growth of numerous animators, like Academy Award winner Adam Eliot in 1996. Watt was key in the creation of scripts and scripts for all her students. She then quit the School to continue developing her own ideas, and returned occasionally as a final scriptwriter and production examiner.

born in Sydney, Watt completed a Graduate Diploma of Film and Television (Animation) at the Swinburne Film and Television School (now Victorian College of the Arts), Melbourne in 1990. The film she made as a student “Catch of the Day” was designed to represent the style of her future work. In 1995 she directed her first short filmcalled Small Treasures, which won the prize for Best Short film at the Venice Film Festival. She also produced an episode in the SBS series Swim Between the Flags called “Local Dive”. It was created in tandem with a different project she directed called “The Way of the Birds” inspired by the book that was titled the same by the author Meme McDonald. The film won the award of the Australian Film Institute as the Best Director for her film in 2005 Look Both Ways.
Sarah Watt was married to actor William McInnes. They have two children: Clem (b. 1993) and Stella (b. 1998).
She died on 4 November 2011 after suffering for six years from breast and bone cancer, aged 53.
