Sarah Steelman (born Sarah Hearne 3 May 1958) is an American Republican politician from Missouri and was the State Treasurer from 2005 until 2009. She is currently working within the Office of Administration in Governor Mike Parson’s administration. She didn’t seek an election as the state treasurer in 2008, after having previously unsuccessfully run for Governor. She was succeeded in the office of Democrat Clint Zweifel on January 12th the 12th of January, 2009. Steelman was mentioned in an article from 2008 that appeared in New York Times as among seventeen women who could one day run for president of the United States. On November 29, 2010, Steelman announced she would be running for Senate in the U.S. Senate in 2012. Steelman was defeated during the Republican primary by U.S. Representative Todd Akin.

In 2004, Steelman ran for State Treasurer of Missouri. At the Republican Primary, she was able to win the majority of votes (39 percent) and beat the State Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, businessman Tom Klein and State Senator Anita Yeckel, Chaplain Al Hanson and the businessman Will Pundmann, and former State Representative Chet Boeke. The general elections saw her beat Democrat Mark Powell, Mayor of Arnold, Missouri, with 51% of the votes. She was the first woman elected to the office after Nancy Farmer.

Although several leaders in the Missouri Republican Party (including former Governor Matt Blunt, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, former House Speaker Rod Jetton, and former U.S. Senator Jim Talent) had indicated their support for Mitt Romney in 2008, Steelman reportedly was “leaning toward McCain again in 2008.”

Steelman taught a class titled “Leadership and Changing Public Policy” during the Fall 2009 semester at Missouri State University.

Steelman has endorsed John McCain for president in 2000. She also briefly considered running for U.S. Senate in November 2002, against Senator Jean Carnahan. However, instead, she chose to seek re-election for her state Senate.

The year 1998 was the time that Steelman campaigned for reelection against Democratic State senator Michael Lybyer, a popular incumbent seeking the fifth time. In his first re-election bid back in 1994 Lybyer was defeated by State Representative Merrill Townley with 55% of the votes despite the nationwide Republican surge that year. In the year 1998 Steelman beat Lybyer by 58%-42 percent margin. Steelman was a representative of Callaway, Osage, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Crawford, Texas, and Dent counties. She was elected in 2002. was elected the re-election by securing 71% of votes.

She went to Jefferson City public schools before going to the University of Missouri, from where she graduated with the Master of Arts degree in History and an master of Arts degree in Economics. In 1998, prior to being elected president Steelman was Director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. She also served as an economist at the Missouri Department of Revenue and as an adjunct professor of Economics at Lincoln University of Missouri in Jefferson City.

On the morning of January 22, 2008, Steelman announced that she would seek a second term as state treasurer, but changed her mind when Governor Matt Blunt announced he would not seek reelection later that same afternoon. Following Blunt’s announcement, Steelman announced she would run for governor.
