Fitz-Gerald was a native of Melbourne, Australia, a place that is a hotspot to squash players. In 1987, she was awarded her first female World Junior Championship and was the female Australian Junior Athlete of the year. It was also during that year that she was a part of Australia in the 1987 Women’s World Team Squash Championships which she finished second to England. In 1992, she was picked for the second time as a player representing Australia at the 1992 Women’s World Team Squash Championships and this time Australia were crowned world champions. It was a remarkable feat. Fitzgerald went on to win seven World Team Championships.
She was the recipient of numerous titles in the 1990s but 1996 was her year of breakthrough. She defeated the English player Cassie Jackman in the World Open Final. The following two years, she beat the rising Michelle Martin in successive finals.
In January 2004, Fitz-Gerald was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her achievements and services to women’s squash, and the promotion of sport and a healthy lifestyle. She was Chairwoman and President of the Women’s International Squash Players Association from 1991 to 2002. In 2010, she was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
