Sarah Balabagan- Sereno (born on 16th August 1979) is an Filipina who was detained by the United Arab Emirates from 1994 until 1996 in connection with murder. Her initial sentence was death, but later released back to the Philippines. The story was turned into film in 1997.

Balabagan’s story was retold during the filming of the Philippine movie The Sarah Balabagan Story. The film was directed by Joel Lamangan the Filipino language film featured Vina Morales as the lead character, which originally was offered to Balabagan but she declined. Government officials of the Philippines tried several times to block the film from screening in order to avoid damaging relationships with United Arab Emirates, and the release was delayed by some time.

In 2013 she married June Sereno, and they have a child. As of 2018, she lives in Las Vegas with her husband and five children.

According to reports, it was following a personal plea for mercy from the Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan that Al-Baloushi’s family members agreed to drop their execution request to exchange blood funds. On October 30, during her third trial the sentence was reduced from one year’s prison term and 100 strokes of cane. She also received a the payment of blood money that was given by an Filipino businessman. She was slapped with 20 strokes for five days, from January 30 to February 5 on the 5th of February, 1996. Philippine Ambassador Roy Seneres said “Balabagan said it was bearable. Embassy officials visited her twice afterward, and there were no marks or bruises or reddening.” But she later admitted the injuries she sustained were more severe than she had previously stated in the moment. Her return to her home in the Philippines on August 1st in 1996 to a rousing welcome.

In August 2003, she announced her engagement to Russell Vergara. She went on to have two more children. She later converted from Islam to Christianity after being introduced to a pastor by a Christian singer, Dulce Amor. She and Vergara divorced in 2010.
