Sara Seager (born 21 July 1971) is an astronomer from Canada and planet scientist. She is an associate professor of astronomy at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is well-known for her research on extrasolar planets as well as their atmospheres. She is the writer of two textbooks on the subject and has been praised for her work in Popular Science, Discover Magazine, Nature, and TIME Magazine. Seager was given an award of a MacArthur Fellowship in 2013 citing her research on the theory of detecting chemical signatures in the atmospheres of exoplanets and in the development of low-cost space telescopes for observing the transits of planets.

Seager was presented with her 2012 Sackler Prize for “analysis of the atmospheres and internal compositions of extra-solar planets,” the Helen B. Warner Prize from the American Astronomical Society in 2007 for the development of “fundamental techniques for understanding, analyzing, and finding the atmospheres of extrasolar planets,” and also the 2004, Harvard Bok Prize in Astronomy. Seager was appointed an associate to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2012, and was selected to join the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada as an honorary member in 2013. In September 2013 , she was made the MacArthur Fellow. The MacArthur Fellow was appointed into the American Philosophical Society in 2018. She was the Elizabeth R. Laird Lecturer at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2018.

Her husband is Charles Darrow and they have two sons from her previous marriage. Her first partner, Michael Wevrick, died of cancer in the year 2011.

She obtained her BSc degree in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Toronto in 1994 with the help of an NSERC U.S. Undergraduate Research Grant and earned a doctorate in astronomy at Harvard University in 1999. Her dissertation was based on theories of atmospheres on planets that are not solar and was overseen by Dimitar Sassolov.

She was a postdoctoral researcher fellow post in the Institute for Advanced Study between 1999 and 2002, and was an experienced researcher in the Carnegie Institution of Washington until the year 2006. She was hired by at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in January 2007 as an associate professor of Physics and Planetary Science.
