On March 18 2013 Steingraber was detained and nine others who were blocking the main entrance of the Inergy natural gas plant near Ithaca for protesting “the industrialization of the Finger Lakes.” In the event of the protesters refused to pay fines Steingraber, along with two others from”Seneca Lake 12 “Seneca Lake 12” received 15-day jail sentences. Steingraber was detained for an additional 10 days at the Chemung County jail in the city of Elmira prior to her release.

Dr. Steingraber was the subject of the 2018 documentary, Unfractured.

On November 19, in the Town of Reading Court, she was sentenced to 15-days in jail after refusing to pay her fine. She served 8-days in the Chemung County jail and was released.
