Lotu-Iiga received some criticism for refusing to resign from his post in the capacity of Auckland City Councillor when he was elected to the House of Representatives. He was absent from a large amount of meetings, and attended 12 of the scheduled 22 meetings. Lotu-Iiga’s response: “People don’t want a politician who only attends meetings. It’s just one aspect of what we do. It’s about getting out and having meetings with people in the community. I’m in good shape. I’m always busy, but I’m in control of it all.” …” In the time that he was absent from meetings, significant decisions were taken with respect to the Tamaki-Maungakiekie Ward. Lotu-Iiga was eventually forced to resign his position as a councillor in the month of October.

On 8 October 2014, Lotu-Iiga received his warrants as Minister for Pacific Peoples, Minister for Ethnic Communities and Minister of Corrections.

In January 2014, Lotu-Iiga was promoted into cabinet, becoming Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, and Associate Minister of Local Government.

In February 2008, Lotu Iiga put his name on the list for his place in the National Party selection for the Maungakiekie electorate. The month before the current Labour Party MP Mark Gosche with the majority of more than 6000 votes, announced that the decision to resign from the seat during the upcoming general election. In April, Lotu-Iiga beat the two National Party nominees for the choice on the first vote.

Peseta Samuelu Masunu “Sam” Lotu-Iiga (born 2 November 1970) was a former member of the New Zealand Parliament for the Maungakiekie electorate. She was elected in the election of 2008. Lotu-Iiga was one of two National Party Pacific Island MPs. Lotu-Iiga is the holder of the Samoan highest chiefly title of Peseta.

Lotu-Iiga sat for the Citizens & Ratepayers’ ticket to be a member of the Auckland City Council during the 2007 Auckland local body election held in the Tamaki-Maungakiekie Ward. After his election was successful Lotu-Iiga was named Chairperson of the City Development Committee on the Council under Mayor John Banks.

In November 2011, Lotu-Iiga was reelected the MP for Maungakiekie, beating Carol Beaumont a second time with an increased majority. Following the election, Lotu-Iiga was elected Chairperson of the Social Services Select Committee, where he has presided over the Government’s welfare reform legislation.
