Sam Lonergan is one of the most popular and richest Australian Rules Footballer who was born on March 26, 1987 in Launceston, Australia. Sam Lonergan (born 26 March 1987) is an ex-professional Australian rules footballer , who played with Essendon Football Club and Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was drafted by to the Launceston Football Club, via the Tassie Mariners U18s and the Tasmanian Devils, with selection 50 from the draft of 2005.

Lonergan was drafted by Richmond during the 2012 Rookie draft. He played in two games for the team in 2013 before being was released at the conclusion of 2013. Lonergan was also a supporter of Richmond throughout his childhood.

In October 2015, Sam was appointed Senior Playing Coach of the Launceston Football Club returning to his home state and his junior club, where he played the majority of his junior football. Sam’s original junior club – Tamar Cats – were based near his home town of Beauty Point.

In 2020 Lonergan became an assistant coach at the Richmond Football Club focusing on midfield development for 1-4 year players.

Lonergan, along with 33 other Essendon players, was found guilty of using a banned performance-enhancing substance, thymosin beta-4, as part of Essendon’s sports supplements program during the 2012 season. They and their teammates were initially not found guilty at the end of March by an AFL Anti-Doping Tribunal, but the verdict of guilty was handed down in January 2016 , following an appeal made by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The suspension lasted for two years. This suspension, with backdating, was lifted in November of 2016; as consequently, he had to serve about 14 months of his suspension and missed the whole year of the TSL season. He was able to return to Launceston as a player coach following his suspension.
