Sam Khalifa (born December 5 1963) is a famous American professional baseball player who played in the past. A player in the infield, Khalifa was a part of Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1985 through 1987. He quit baseball when the father of his son, Rashad Khalifa was killed in the year 1990.

His father’s name, Rashad Khalifa, was killed on the 31st of January of 1990. Khalifa was a player playing for The Nashua Pirates of the Eastern League in 1984. He hit .238 in Nashua in 91 games in spite of missing playing time after fracturing his wrist twice. Pirates Manager Chuck Tanner wanted Khalifa to start the season in 1985 as a player on the Pirates Major League roster, however Pete Peterson, the Pirates general manager determined that Khalifa required time in Class AAA before he could be at a level to play in the major leagues. Khalifa began the season of 1985 by playing with the Hawaii Islanders of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League, and after he hit .282 in the Islanders He made the MLB debut on the 25th of June in 1985, taking over the injured Johnnie LeMaster. He was one of the six players to play with the Pirates at shortstop for this season. The Pirates started their season by bringing in Tim Foli and Rafael Belliard. Foli received his release while Belliard was demoted to Hawaii. Jerry Dybzinski received one game as a shortstop for the Pirates which was next followed by Bill Almon, and the trade purchase by LeMaster of LeMaster from Cleveland Indians.

Joe L. Brown, the former general manager of the Pirates, arranged a tryout for Khalifa with the San Diego Padres in 1990. Khalifa quit baseball without attending the tryout following the murder of his father. He played 164 games across three seasons in the majors, most as a shortstop. His primary historical importance arises from his status as the first man of Egyptian descent to play major league baseball. He ended his career with a .219 batting average, a .294 on-base percentage, and a .285 slugging percentage.
