Samuel Isaac Dyson (born May 7 1988) is an American professional baseball player who is an unrestricted free agent. He was previously a part of Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Toronto Blue Jays, Miami Marlins, Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants, and Minnesota Twins. He played his college baseball during his time at South Carolina. Dyson is among the few who win both a College World Series and a World Baseball Classic.
Dyson was promoted into the MLB on July 5th the 5th of July, 2012. He was the very first Blue Jays player from the draft of 2010 to make it to the MLB. Dyson also made debut in his MLB debut later in the day with the final strike in the seventh in the 7th. After the catcher was Billy Butler, Dyson struck out Yuniesky Betancourt. On the 19th of July Yan Gomes was called up to the Jays as well as Dyson was returned to Double-A New Hampshire after making 2 appearances in two weeks. In 3/3 of an innings, Dyson allowed 3 earned runs and struck out one. Dyson was assigned to assignment on the 22nd of January 2013 to make space in the team of 40 of Mark DeRosa.
While playing for the Pacific Coast League’s New Orleans Zephyrs, Dyson was involved in a fight with Zephyrs’ teammate Chris Hatcher at a Nashville bar on April 29, 2014. Dyson’s jaw was broken by Hatcher in the fight, resulting in surgery which put him on the injured list for six weeks and a 5-game suspension for Hatcher for conduct detrimental to the team.
After giving up the series-clinching home run to Toronto Blue Jays’ right fielder José Bautista in game 5 of the 2015 American League Division Series, Dyson confronted Edwin Encarnación of the Blue Jays and informed him that he did not approve of Bautista’s subsequent bat flip. Dyson also became involved in a confrontation with Blue Jays’ shortstop Troy Tulowitzki over his displeasure. The exchanges led to both dugouts emptying and a long delay in completing the game. In explaining his actions afterwards, Dyson told reporters, “(Bautista)’s a huge role model for the younger generation that’s coming up and playing this game. He’s doing stuff that kids do in whiffle ball games and backyard baseball.”
Dyson was not a professional pitcher in 2010, following a the repair of his labrum, and Dyson was out for the entirety of the season of 2011 recovering after undergoing Tommy John operation on the right side of his elbow. In his two seasons playing in minor leagues Dyson had a 2-0 record with 3 saves with having a 2.56 ERA, 13 walks and 24 strikeouts during 52.2 innings.

Dyson was born in Tampa, Florida, to Sid and Gwenn Dyson. He was a student at Tampa Jesuit High School, pitching for all four years of the school’s baseball team , having a record of 10-1 in his senior season. He was picked to the Washington Nationals in the 19th round of the 2006 MLB draft, but he decided to go to college instead.
The University of South Carolina, the player was unable to play due to an injury during his first year of college and was awarded medical redshirt. He recorded an 8-0 mark with an average of 4.09 ERA in 2008. After the conclusion of his sophomore year he was selected in 10th spot of 2009’s Major League Baseball Draft, however, he decided to stay in the college. In 16 games (15 starts) before the break, he went 3-7 with a 2.63 ERA, striking out 41 in 75.1 innings. After making one rehab assignment with the GCL Marlins, he was assigned to Triple-A New Orleans, where he made 5 more starts. In the minors in 2013, Dyson went 4-11 with a 2.67 ERA, striking out 62 in 111.1 innings. On August 29, Dyson was recalled by the Marlins, replacing Arquimedes Caminero. He made his Marlins debut that day, pitching 2 innings, while giving up 5 hits and 3 earned runs. After making 2 more relief appearances, Dyson made his first major league start on September 16 against the Phillies, lasting only 2.2 innings, giving up 7 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks, striking out 1. In 5 games (1 start) for the Marlins in 2013, Dyson went 0-2, giving up 11 runs in 11 innings while striking out 5 and walking 5.
