Sam Coulson (born 9 February 1987) is an English guitarist who is most well-known for his time in the progressive rock group Asia from 2013 until the year 2018, when his guitar playing abilities were spotted on the video hosting website YouTube. Sam was raised in Chigwell London, and later relocated in his home in the Worcestershire city of Bromsgrove. In 2013, Coulson got married and relocated to Canada. In 2019, he’s as the lead guitarist of the Queen-inspired musical We Will Rock You on its North American tour.

Coulson quit Asia in the year 2018 to concentrate on his solo projects. The news was made public by the band through the form of a tour announcement, as well as by Coulson himself via a Twitter blog post on April 2nd, 2019 in which Coulson saying that he was looking forward going to see the group “as a fan”. After the departure of Asia, Coulson released a second album on the 15th of March 2019 titled Black Cross which is comprised of original guitar songs.

Coulson began his journey on the video-hosting site YouTube at the end of 2007 where he shared videos of him performing songs with an electric guitar. His guitar playing caught the attention of famous American musician Paul Gilbert, who in July 2012 asked him to become a guest instructor in the “Great Guitar Escape” series of guitar workshops in addition to Coulson being invited to the stage to join American blues singer Walter Trout in October of the same year.

The Asia guitar player Steve Howe retired from the band in January of 2013, Coulson was selected as his replacement. As per Asia Frontman John Wetton, the band had an “list of favourites” for the replacement of Howe. Gilbert was among these preferred candidates, but was not able to fulfill the job, and was recommended by Coulson. Coulson was a part of Asia on their album Gravitas that was released on March 2014, in addition to performing on the tour that followed. In the midst of Asia’s break in 2015, Coulson worked on a solo album called Electric Classical, consisting of classical songs performed on electric guitar. The album was released on the 20th of November in 2015.
