Amidon’s parents are members of the Bread and Puppet Theatre during the 1970s. They performed with the group throughout Europe and living at the Bread and Puppet Farm in Glover, Vermont. They made an appearance in the Nonesuch album Rivers of Delight with the Word of Mouth Chorus, the most famous recording of shape note and Sacred Harp folk hymns by early American composers.

The year 2001 was the time that Amidon released Solo Fiddle An album featuring traditional Irish fiddle music.

In 2007 he premiered Muhly’s The Only Tune at Carnegie Hall as part of John Adams’s In Your Ear festival. He has performed the piece at London’s Roundhouse and Barbican, as well as at Cork’s Safe Harbour festival in collaboration with the Crash Ensemble. Writing about the recorded version of The Only Tune, which appeared on Muhly’s 2008 album Mothertongue, Greil Marcus said, “It’s incalculably spooky, the way the action comes out of nowhere, the way Amidon has prepared you to expect nothing.”

Amidon’s first album of songs, But This Chicken Proved False Hearted (2007), was made with longtime collaborator Thomas Bartlett and was initially released on the Los Angeles-based electronic label Plug Research. It was reissued on CD and LP in 2015 by Omnivore Recordings.

When he was a teenager, Amidon discovered artists such as Tony Conrad, Albert Ayler, Yo La Tengo, Miles Davis and Don Cherry and new field recordings of those of the Old Weird Americ such as the Harry Smith Anthology, the Alan Lomax Southern Journey series and the music that were written by Dock Boggs. In the beginning of 2000 Amidon was a resident of New York City and played in the indie bands that experimented, Doveman as well as Stars Like Fleas.

Sam Amidon, born Samuel Tear Amidon (born on the 3rd of June 1981 , in Brattleboro, Vermont) is an American folk artist. He is the son of folk artist Peter Amidon and Mary Alice Amidon. He is the younger sibling of Stefan Amidon is professional drummer who plays in The Sweetback Sisters among other groups. Amidon went to The Putney School in Putney, Vermont for one year.

Amidon was raised within Brattleboro, Vermont, where his family band along with his parents. He also played the fiddle as young as three. When he turned 13, he began playing professionally alongside the pianist Thomas Bartlett, a childhood friend, as well as his brother Stefan who was in the dance group called Popcorn Behavior. Influenced by bands like Wild Asparagus and Nightingale, and the classic Irish Fiddlers Martin Hayes and Tommy Peoples, Popcorn Behavior released their first album in 1994 . Amidon Bartlett and Amidon Bartlett were 13 and 14 respectively and Stefan was 10 years old. Keith Murphy joined the group for their third album . they toured across the United States and released five albums and appeared for NPR’s “All Things Considered”, even though the musicians were in high school.

Between 2002 and 2006, Amidon devised a multimedia program called “Home Alone Inside My Head,” consisting of “self-inflicted field recordings,” drawn comics, short videos, storytelling and improvisation. He excerpted the project online and performed it in full at experimental music and art spaces around New York City and Brooklyn and beyond, including NYC’s The Kitchen and MAD Museum, Monkeytown in Brooklyn, the AVA gallery on NYC’s Lower East Side, Cincinnati’s CAC, the Kuhturm Gallery in Leipzig, and MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA.

Amidon has performed as part of the Bedroom Community Whale Watching Tour at The Barbican and Reykjavik’s Harpa concert hall. Amidon has done collaborative concerts and mini- tours with artists such as Bill Frisell, Nels Cline, Jason Moran, and Marc Ribot. In February 2017 he toured as soloist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Pekka Kuusisto, including performances at the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Recital Hall, and concerts throughout the country. In 2020 he will play at the first edition of the Monheim Triennale.
