In the year the year 1996 Fanni achieved a decent record of 30-5. The debut (of three) world title shots on 19 July 1997, when Fanni was matched against Carlos Gabriel Salazar for his WBO flyweight title in the Italian town in Porto Rotondo. He was defeated by the Argentine with a unanimity. The next fight came one year later, when he took on Mexican wrestler Ruben Sanchez Leon to fight for this same championship in Cagliari. However, he was not victorious the fight ended in defeat in the same manner to Sanchez Leon in the same manner: 12 rounds UD.

Arce defeated Fanni by TKO in the sixth round; it was the first and only time Fanni was ever stopped in his career. He received one last shot at the European flyweight title on December 3, 1999, losing to Russian fighter Alexander Makhmutov in Milan. He retired after the bout.

After retiring for good in 2003, he settled in the Is Mirrionis district of Cagliari with his wife and three kids, and has spent most of his time volunteering.

Fanni made his debut in the professional ranks the 10th of April in 1988 defeating Tunisian boxer Mohamed ben Ali Saidi in Iglesias. After having won his first 16 fights in the sport, he was offered an opportunity to fight for his vacant European Flyweight championship on the 3rd of August 1990, and was matched against Scottish boxer (and potential world champion) Pat Clinton in Cagliari. Clinton was defeated by the Italian via a majority vote during what later referred to as the greatest ever performance in his professional career, claiming that he had been “at the top of [his] game” at the moment.

On May 31, 1996, in what was only his second fight outside of Italy, Fanni challenged Danish fighter Jesper Jensen for the vacant European flyweight belt in Copenhagen. He lost the bout by unanimous decision after 12 rounds. Jensen later ranked his victory over Fanni as one of his greatest achievements. Three months later, Fanni defeated Michele Poddighe, winning the vacant Italian flyweight title, although he never defended it.
