Sahle-Work Zewde (Ge’ez: saahelawareqe zawedee ; born on 21 February 1950) is an Ethiopian politician, who is currently the President of Ethiopia and the first woman to be elected to the presidency. A diplomat in the profession she was elected president in a unanimous vote by lawmakers of the Federal Parliamentary Assembly on 25 October, 2018.

Sahle-Work took office as the president of Ethiopia on the 25th of October, 2018, becoming the first woman in this position, and is four-time president after the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) coalition was established in the newly formed Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in 1995. She succeeded Mulatu Teshome, who left under a variety of circumstances. Sahle-Work is scheduled to serve two terms of six years.

Although her role is largely ceremonial (with most executive power lying with the Prime Minister), Sahle-Work’s election made her Ethiopia’s first female head of state since Empress Zewditu. As of 2019, she is Africa’s only serving female head of state.

In December 2019, Sahle-Work was named the 93rd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes, and the highest-ranking African woman on the list.

Up to 2011, Sahle Work served as the Special Rep to United Nations Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon and also as the head of the United Nations Integrated Peace-building Office in the Central African Republic (BINUCA).
