Ali qualified for the 2008 Olympics by finishing in second place at the AIBA 1st Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago in March 2008. He defeated Jesus Cuadro of Venezuela in the quarterfinal round, and Juan Nicolas Cuellas of Argentina in the semifinal round. He lost by decision in the final round to Cuba’s Yordenis Ugás by a score of 13-5. round.

Ali accepted an indefinite voluntary suspension on November 22, 2007. Ali appealed to International Boxing Association (“AIBA”) for a reversal of the test results. Ali hired an attorney to challenge these findings. Ali claims he took Cathine accidentally after catching a cold in China. However, the widespread use of stimulant drug Khat among the Yemeni American population is well-known. Later, Ali’s doctor admitted that he had administered Cathine to Ali and that the combination could have led to a positive test for Cathine. The Olympic Games Committee bans cathine concentrations exceeding five micrograms per liter in urine. Ali accepted Ali’s voluntary suspension in February 2008. In exchange, he agreed to drop his challenges. Ali was permitted to take part in the two remaining Olympic qualification tournaments in Spring 2008 after his ban expired on February 22 2008.
