He is currently the incumbent member in Bangladesh of Parliament from the Dhaka-9 constituency. From 2014 to 2017, he was president of Inter-Parliamentary Union. He was the former president and chief executive of Bangladesh Cricket Board. He was awarded the Order of Friendship by Russia, Russia’s highest state decoration.

Chowdhury was 28th president of Inter-Parliamentary Union. Chowdhury was elected to this position on 16 Oct 2014 for a 3 year term and is the first Bangladeshi in the post. IPU is the international organization of parliaments. It is the center for global parliamentary dialogue. IPU supports and works closely with United Nations, whose goals it shares. It is a Permanent Observer at the UN. Chowdhury, the IPU President, is also a member the high-level group Every Woman Every Child. This global movement champions the health of children and women led by Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary General.

Chowdhury, the current member of Jatiya Sangsad is from Dhaka-9. Chowdhury was Deputy Minister of Ministry of Ports & Shipping, and later Deputy Minister of Local Government, Rural Development & Cooperatives (1999-192001). During this time, he was the youngest member of the Cabinet. Chowdhury was promoted to Political Party Level in October 2001, as Political Secretary for Sheikh Hasina (the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament). He was then elected Organizing Sec (1) of the Party, with responsibility for Dhaka Division.

Chowdhury graduated from School of Oriental and African Studies University of London and holds a double honours degree in politics and economics. Chowdhury also holds a diploma from the University of Westminster in law. Chowdhury began his career as an entrepreneur in the private sector. He switched to politics full-time in 1996.
