Saajid Badat Biography

Saajid Badat is one of the most popular and richest Terrorist who was born on March 28, 1979 in Gloucester, England, United Kingdom. Saajid Muhammad Badat, a British Islamist terrorist, was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for plotting to blow up an airplane with a bomb hidden inside his shoe.

Badat returned to Blackburn for Islamic studies after Reid’s failed mission was overturned and he was convicted. Although he appears to have broken off all ties with his Pakistani handler, he kept the components of the shoe bomb at his Gloucester home on St. James Street (the explosive was in a hallway cupboard, and the detonator under his mattress). Police searched the house in November 2003, based on secret intelligence. They discovered the bomb parts hidden in the home (they had evacuated over 100 families from nearby houses) and arrested Saajid Baat. His father Muhammad Badat spent several days visiting every home in the neighborhood to apologize for his son after the family was allowed to return.

During his incarceration, Badat assisted British and US authorities with information on other alleged terrorists. Some of this information was used in the US prosecution of Adis Medunjanin, a suspect in a 2009 plot to attack the New York City Subway. Because of this co-operation, Badat’s sentence was cut from 13 years to 11, and an order put in place banning reporting of this deal to police and the media due to concern for Badats’ safety until he was due to give evidence in public. In 2012 the British government revealed that Badat had been released from prison in March 2010. Theresa May was questioned by Labour MP Keith Vaz about the deal which included the use of taxpayer money to rehouse Badat and provide an office space with phone and internet service. May defended the agreement citing that “Crown Protection Services have said that they considered very carefully the merits of entering into this agreement with a convicted terrorist, that they believed the administration of justice would actually benefit from the agreement they entered into” and that “co-operation is obviously a long-standing feature of our criminal justice system”.

This idea were discussed later in a few newspapers but only until 19 March 2014.

Badat returned to Pakistan in November 2001 and obtained duplicate passports from British consulates. Court documents state that Badat was at the British Embassy in Brussels on 12 September 2001. He had seen the terrorist attacks on the previous day via television. Badat and Reid both returned to Pakistan in November 2001 and were reportedly sent overland to Afghanistan. Both were given “shoe bombs,” casual footwear that can be concealedly smuggled onto planes before being destroyed. Later, forensic analysis of both bombs revealed that they contained the same plastic explosive. The respective lengths detonator cords had also come from the same batch. Badat’s cut mark matches Reid’s. They returned to the UK separately in December 2001.

Both men maintained contact with their Pakistani handlers upon their return using an email system and telephone cards. Badat sent an email to his handler shortly after, informing him that he wasn’t sure if he would continue with the scheme. In preparation for his flight to the USA, Badat booked a flight from Manchester, Netherlands to Amsterdam. Reid booked a flight from Manchester to Amsterdam and then to Paris, before he flew to Miami. Reid boarded the plane on 22 December 2001. Badat didn’t, after he emailed his handler saying, “You will need to tell Van Damme he could be alone.” Later, he testified that his father talked him out of bombing. He told him that he had heard of sleepers. If I discover that you are one of those sleeping people, I will kill your family.”

On 28 February 2005 at the Old Bailey in London, Badat pleaded guilty to involvement in a conspiracy to destroy a US-bound aircraft. On 22 April Badat was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment. Delivering the sentence the judge, Justice Fulford, said Badat’s withdrawal from the plot justified a more lenient sentence, saying, “Turning away from crime in circumstances such as these constitutes a powerful mitigating factor”. Had Badat not withdrawn, the judge said, he would have received a life sentence.
