The party leader Karunanidhi spoke out about the internal conflict and stated that “When I go sleep, such factional feuds consume me and make my sleepless.” Baalu being the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways, initiated the survey for the 47 km (29 mi) Thanjavur-Pattukottai railway line and the 42 km (26 mi) Mannargudi-Pattukottai rail project, which is believed to have created the conflict.

Palanimanickam joined DMK in 1965 during the Anti-Hindi agitation. His father Subbiah Vanniyar, a strong Congress party worker and an aide to R Venkataraman & G K Moopanar, was his DMK aide. He was a five-time member of parliament, and had won five consecutive elections since 1996. From 2004 to March 2012, he was the minister of state at the ministry of finances. The DMK pulled its support from the UPA coalition government. T. R. Baalu was the minister of state in the ministry of finance, and S.S. Palanimanickam was the minister of state in that department. In 2012, T. R. Baalu started a survey in Thanjavur for railway lines. T. R. Baalu wanted to contest from Thanjavur at the 2014 Indian general elections. The DMK denied Palanimanickam a ticket. However, Baalu lost the election. Palanimanickam won the party ticket again in the Indian general election 2019.
