He also served on the editorial staff of Shattersheet, The Moment, and MEAT. He co-edited The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry, which won the Firecracker Alternative Book Award 2000. H.I.P. was founded by him. H.I.P. Griffin first appeared in poetry anthologies and periodicals in the 1980s. He also began publishing poetry. He is heavily influenced by Dada, Charles Bukowski and the Beat Generation. He serves as an advisor on the curatorial board of Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center and was the first recipient in 2011 of Beyond Baroque’s Distinguished Service Award. From the late 1990s to 1998, he was a frequent at the Onyx Cafe, Los Feliz. He produced a variety of poetry-reading and performances there. He traveled extensively across the United States, performing with three poetry groups, of which he was part: The Lost Tribe (1985-1992), The Carma Bums (89-2009) & White Trash Apocalypse (95-1997). In 1989, Wanda Coleman dubbed him “L.A.’s Best Performance Poet” in The LA Weekly. Lucinda MicheleKnapp, editor of the Los Angeles Alternative Press, called him the “should be poet laureate for Los Angeles”.

Griffin, the oldest child of six, was born in San Antonio Texas. Griffin grew up in San Francisco East Bay, where he lived primarily in the Easter Hill Village housing development in Richmond, California. In 1972, he graduated from Castro Valley High School and voluntarily joined the United States Air Force. After his four-year tour, he returned home to the East Bay. He lived in Hayward, California, and the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco. He was granted a scholarship to Los Angeles Civic Light Opera workshop in September

American pinstripe artist and fabricator Skratch pinstriped the bomb, which Griffin named Elsie in honor of his paternal grandmother. Between April and June 2010, Griffin toured with Elsie the Poetry Bomb across the United States, appearing at 30 different venues, and inviting people to put their poems inside.
