Ryuji Sasai (Sey Jing Long SI, Sasai Ryuji – born December 21, 1961) was a Japanese former videogame composer and bass guitarist. His work on Final Fantasy Legend III, Xak and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest are his most well-known. Sasai is known for his rock sound. When he was 15, he started his musical career and formed a band. Sasai worked in the anime department before he entered the gaming industry. He scored two TV series and a movie. He was a freelance music composer for four games before he joined Square in 1991. There he worked on five different games.
Sasai was able to complete the score for Bushido Blade 2 in 1998 and Action dispersed 1999. He had originally planned to score two role playing games in the aftermath of Bushido Blade 2. However, due to company circumstances, this did not happen. He decided to leave Square after he was not given any other assignments by Square. Sasai currently plays bass guitar for Queen’s tribute band Queen Mania and Spiders from Cabaret.
He composed 1992’s Final Fantasy Mystic Quest with Yasuhiro Kanami. It was the first Final Fantasy game not to have been composed by Uematsu, and was his second Square work. After a brief hiatus at the height of Action’s activity Sasai was appointed the only composer for Rudra no Hiho (1996). After that, he composed the track “Character Select”, which was used in the score of the multi-composer Tobal No. 1; The track was included in Tobal No. 1 Remixes of Electrical Indian, as arranged by GUIDO.

Ryuji was born in Osaka Japan. He started his musical career as a musician at the age 15 when he played instruments and formed a band. He joined Novela in 1982 as an instrumentalist and songwriter. He composed the music for the anime series The Mysterious Cities of Gold (1982), and Adventures of the Little Koala (84). He composed the music for the 1986 film Windaria with Satoshi Kadokura after Novela was disbanded in 1984. In 1988, he joined Action as a bass guitarist and backing vocalist. The band remained active for over a decade.
In 1989, he made his debut as a game composer with Crystal Software’s Mugen No Shinzo III. He was accompanied by Chihiro Fujioka. Micro Cabin was the first to respond to his resume and demo tapes. Along with Tadahiro Nitta, he composed music for three Xak titles: Xak II. The Rising of the Red Moon, Fray in Magical Adventure and Xak: The Art of Visual Stage. He was also a freelance composer during this period. After Fujioka was hired as Square’s director, Sasai was asked to join the company. They needed composers to help Nobuo Uematsu or Kenji Ito. Sasai’s first task was to compose the soundtrack for the Game Boy title Final Fantasy Legend III. Sasai composed most of the score. Fujioka handled four pieces.
