Ryuichi Yoneyama Biography

Ryuichi Yoneyama is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on September 8, 1967 in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Ryuichi Yamayama (Mi Shan Long Yi, Yoneyama Ryuichi; born 8 September 1967) was a Japanese politician. He is also a former Governor for Niigata Prefecture. Before entering politics, Yoneyama was a radiology researcher at University of Tokyo Hospital. He also had a legal training.

Hirohiko, the three-term governor of Niigata, announced in 2016 that he would not be running for another term in the next year’s elections. The major parties scrambled to find candidates for this coveted post. The strong anti- nuclear sentiments that swept the country, especially due to the Kashiwazaki–Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant located in the prefecture, did not spare Niigata. TEPCO was the company that ran the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The candidate for Mayor of Nagaoka Tamio Mori was supported by the pro-nuclear group led by the LDP. To avoid having their votes split, the opposition decided that they would unite behind one candidate for election. Yoneyama was chosen as the opposition’s unity candidate. He received the support of the SDP and LP, as well the JCP. His candidacy was supported fully by opposition politicians including Renho, DP vice president Kenji Eda and Niigata Councillor Naoki Kasama. Yuko Mori, who is not related to Tamio, was also present. Yoneyama was elected to the public office for the first-time in his career after winning the 16 October election with a margin of 6%. His election was celebrated as a significant victory for the anti-nuclear power movement of that time.

He began his career as a lawyer, specializing in medical malpractice cases. As a member the Japan Restoration Party (JRP) he contested the Niigata-5th Seat in the 2012 election, finishing third. The JRP elected him to be their candidate in the Niigata at large district election 2013. He finished fourth behind three incumbent Councillors. Yoneyama would be following the party in the two subsequent mergers into the Japan Innovation Party, and later into The Democratic Party.

Yoneyama passed a bar exam in 1997. He said that he was motivated by the arrogance displayed by the university’s students of law. Between 1998 and 2000, he also completed modules at the school’s School of Economics and Medicine without actually enrolling in any degree. In 2003, Yoneyama received a PhD at the University of Tokyo. While he was working towards his PhD, there were several attachments at Harvard University and the National Institute of Radiological Sciences. He also did research at Massachusetts General Hospital. His expertise in medical research was what led to him being appointed as a lecturer in healthcare policy at the university’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology.

Liberal Democratic Party recruited Yoneyama to be their candidate in the Niigata 5th District election of 2005. He was defeated by Makiko Tanaka, the popular and long-serving incumbent Foreign Minister. In 2009, he faced Tanaka again. Despite having a higher share of votes, Yoneyama couldn’t overcome the Democratic Party of Japan landslide that swept the country in the election.

In April 2018, reports surfaced that Yoneyama had been paying women he met in dating sites. Yoneyama admitted that the allegations were true. He confessed to paying money to the women to simply win their favours, but acknowledged that it could create the impression of buying sex. He submitted his resignation on 18 April and left office on 27 April. His resignation triggered an early gubernatorial election in June 2018 and the nuclear debate was expected to heavily feature in the campaign.
