Hainje was one the two freshmen who played in all 32 games. He was also a starter in Butler’s final 28 games. He was second in rebounding and third in scoring, with double-figures in 10 of his games. He was selected to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC), All-Newcomer Team in 1999. Hainje, who scored 15 points against Old Dominion in the 1999 NIT, shared the scoring lead with Butler.

Hainje was a Cathedral High School two-sport athlete, helping to lead his school to the Indiana High School Athletic Association state basketball and football championships. Hainje was the Cathedral’s leading scorer and rebounder, winning the Indiana 3A state basketball championship in 1997-98. He was also named to all-sectional and all-regional teams as well as the all- state tournament and all-semistate team. Hainje was the “City Player” of Indianapolis in his last season with Cathedral. He averaged 16.8 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. In 1996, he was the Cathedral’s starting tight end.

Rylan Hainje, born March 9, 1980, is an American basketball player. Hainje, a forward and shooting guard was named Horizon League Player-of-the Year in 2002. After playing basketball and football at Cathedral High School, Indianapolis, Hainje joined Butler Bulldogs in 1998-99. After graduating from Butler in 1998, Hainje began playing professionally in Europe and the United States in the International Basketball League (2005-05).

Hainje played in all 32 games in his junior season. He was named to MCC All- Defensive Team and earned a spot to the MCC All-Tournament Team. In 16 games, Hainje scored double-digits. He also scored 15 points against Wake Forest in round one of the NCAA Tournament. Hainje scored a team record of 18 points and six boards against Arizona in Fiesta Bowl Classic. This was less than four hours after he was admitted to a hospital with flu-like symptoms.

After graduating from Butler, Hainje considered a return to football as an NFL tight end, and the Indianapolis Colts sent him through a private workout. He opted to continue with basketball and was a member of the Indiana Pacers Summer League Team in 2002. He next played internationally in Körmend, Hungary, where he averaged 12 points and 5 rebounds as he led his team to the Hungarian National Championship. The next season, 2003-2004, Rylan played for Levallois Basket in Roanne, France, averaging 16.5 points and 6.3 rebounds a game. In 2004, Hainje joined the Gary Steelheads, where coach Duane Ticknor described Hainje as “an explosive player with a lot of scoring punch. He does a lot of little things that might not show up in the box score but are appreciated by his teammates and the coaching staff. We are happy to have Rylan on board and are excited to see him perform when training camp opens.”
