Rykka was born Christina Maria Rieder in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She began guitar lessons at age 15, then performed at local community festivals. During her two-year program at Vancouver Community College, Christina studied voice with Paula Kremer, while also busking around Vancouver’s Granville Island.

Rykka’s 2012 album Kodiak was called Kodiak. She made a major change in her musical career when she officially changed her stage name to Christina Maria. Rykka recorded “Kodiak”. Ryan Guldemond, Mother Mother’s producer, mixed Warne Livesey, and mastering by Andy VanDette, produced the record. Little Jig Records released it that year in Switzerland.

She placed last in the second semifinal of Eurovision 2016.
