Wagner was an All American closer at the University of Houston.
Before being placed on the disabled list, Wagner played in 14 Washington games in 2007. After undergoing surgery to repair his right shoulder’s labrum, Wagner missed the rest of the 2007 season. Along with Pete Orr, Wagner and Chad Cordero rejected Wagner’s assignment to Triple-A. He became a free agent October 30, 2008. Wagner signed a new contract with Washington shortly thereafter.
Baseball America stated that Wagner should be a mid first-round selection. It had passed Brad Sullivan, the University of Houston’s most-in-demand pitcher, just a few days before the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft. According to the publication, Wagner was “the most unhittable pitcher in the draft”, but some scouts were concerned about Wagner’s delivery. The Reds selected Wagner in the 14th round of the 2003 draft.

In 2002 and 2003, Wagner played college baseball for the Houston Cougars. Wagner was a Houston Cougars college baseball player in 2002 and 2003. He set a school record with 15 saves.
