Ryan Lonie is one of the most popular and richest Australian Rules Footballer who was born on March 4, 1983 in Frankston, Victoria, Australia. Ryan Lonie, born 4 March 1983, is a former Collingwood player in the Australian Football League.
Lonie’s 2005 season was his worst. He managed just 10 games and spent most of the season with Williamstown. After round two, his absence cut short his incredible streak of 59 matches played in the senior team. He was able to get back in the senior side by midseason and enjoyed a great run. His future at the club was at risk. In round 18, he sustained a minor injury to his knee against Fremantle, but he returned in the final match against the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome.
Lonie played all 25 games in 2003. The Pies reached the Grand Final again. However, they missed out on the final prize. He received a 50 point defeat at the hands the Brisbane Lions. Lonie’s personal form was poor at best. His run from defense became less frequent as his impact on matches decreased. Lonie’s decline in form was evident in the last two weeks of the season when he only produced 5 touches in either Preliminary nor Grand Finals. 2004 saw the transition from Lonie’s number 37 guernsey to Mark Richardson’s number 3. Although he played in all of the games, his form was solid, if not exceptional, as the Magpies fell back to earth. Lonie was forced into the attack late in the season. He scored three goals against Port Adelaide under the MCG lights, in another loss in round 21.

Lonie was plagued by the second-year blues and osteitis pubis the following season as the Magpies raced towards their first finals appearance in 1994. Lonie managed to play 18 games and spent a lot of time with Williamstown VFL affiliate. Lonie’s finals performance was a huge boost to his stock. It saw him get back to his hard running and rebounding form. He also showed his ability to face any challenge head-on in a feature of the Magpies September. Lonie’s courage was a key factor in the Qualifying Final victory over Port Adelaide. He scored two goals from long distance to keep the Power at bay. Lonie’s impressive line breaking run and left foot searching that hit Anthony Rocca midway through term three of the Preliminary final against Adelaide was what led to Rocca’s famous 75m goal. He was also one the Magpies’ top performers from the wing in the Grand Final against Brisbane Lions, as opposed to Nigel Lappin.
Lonie was a junior footballer playing with Nathan (Hawthorn and then Port Adelaide), for the Frankston Rovers Junior Football Club. His left boot was a powerful one and his speed and running ability on the field were impressive. This made it easy for the crowd to cheer him on when he got the ball into space. Lonie was a member of the MPNFL Frankston Bombers before he played in the TAC Cup for Dandenong Stingrays. At number 34, he was taken in the third round of 2000’s AFL Draft. In round one of 2001 season against Hawthorn, he made his debut. Lonie, who was called up to replace James Clement after he suffered an injury, was a great player for the Pies in their four-point loss. With his daring runs through the midfield and his ability to score with his raking left foot, Lonie quickly became a crowd favorite. His two goals against Essendon in round five are just days after he was nominated for an AFL Rising Star nomination. Lonie played in 21 of the season’s matches and was only absent from round 22 against the Kangaroos because of a shoulder injury. His performances were so impressive that he was considered a favorite to win the AFL Rising Star Award. However, Justin Koschitzke from St Kilda proved to be a worthy winner.
He survived the cull, and rebounded in impressive fashion, playing all 23 matches in 2006, though his trademark run and carry from defence had dried up somewhat, Lonie then acting as a linkman between the ball carriers. 2007 was a year the boy from Frankston would rather forget, playing only four games as osteitis pubis again took its toll. At the end of Collingwood’s 2008 season Lonie retired at the age of 25.
