Ruth Wilson Gilmore is one of the most popular and richest Geographer who was born on April 2, 1950 in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. Ruth Wilson was born in New Haven, Connecticut on April 2, 1950. Courtland Seymour, her father, was a machinist who was active in the union. He had been raised by an active family in the workers’ union at Yale University. She was the first and most prominent African American student to attend a New Haven private school in 1960. She attended Swarthmore College in 1968. There she was involved with campus politics and met Angela Davis, her younger sister. John Huggins, Gilmore’s cousin was a founder member of the Black Panthers Southern California chapter. He was killed while Gilmore was at Swarthmore in 1969. She enrolled at Yale later that year and received a drama degree.

Gilmore is a prominent scholar and speaker on topics such as prisons, racial capital, oppositional movements and state-making. The book Golden Gulag, which she wrote, was awarded the Lora Romero First Book Publication Prize by the American Studies Association for the best book on American Studies in 2008. Her writings have also been published in Race & Class, The Professional Geographer, Social Justice, Global Lockdown, Race, Gender, the Prison Industrial Complex, as well as the critical anthology The Revolution Won’t Be Funded: Beyond Non-Profit Industrial Complex, which was edited and published by Incite! collective.

In 2012, the American Studies Association awarded her the first Angela Y. Davis prize for Public Scholarship that “recognizes scholars who have applied or used their scholarship for the “public good.” This includes work that explicitly aims to educate the public, influence policies, or in other ways seeks to address inequalities in imaginative, practical, and applicable forms.”

In 2014, Gilmore received the Harold M. Rose Award for Anti-Racism Research and Practice from the Association of American Geographers.

Gilmore received her Ph.D. in 1998 from Rutgers University. She was inspired by Neil Smith’s work in economic geography. After completing her Ph.D., she was appointed as an assistant professor at Berkeley. She began work on her carceral geography concept. Carceral geography studies the interdependence of landscape, natural resources and political economy. It also examines infrastructure and the control, policing and jailing of people.
