In 1998, Spencer was a member in a manufactured pop group called Scooch. They had four top twenty hits, including the top five single “More Than I Needed To Know” and the album Four Sure. Scooch reached number one in Japan and Australia with their single More Than I Needed to Know. However, they were disbanded by EMI after disappointing sales of Four Sure 2000.

Scooch, who had been inactive for seven years, was able to return to Eurovision: Making Your Mind up in 2007, a BBC TV contest that determined the entry of the United Kingdom to the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. They were selected as the UK’s entry beating Brian Harvey and Justin Hawkins. Russ wrote the song “Flying the Flag(For You),” which was signed to Warner Bros. It received 19 votes and came in joint 22nd place out of 24 entries. The single reached the fifth position in the UK’s Eurovision chart, surpassing the 1997 contest win by Katrina and Waves.

He created the role of ‘Ricky St Clair’ in the UK tour of Dave Simpson’s The eXtra Factor, and played ‘Joe’ in Santa Claus – The Musical alongside Anita Dobson and Roy Barraclough at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham. He has also been in Wayne Sleep’s Explosive Dance and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Birthday Celebration both at the Royal Albert Hall, and a world tour as lead vocalist with the New Zealand and Hawaii Symphony orchestras.
