Rupert James Hamer, 28 February 1970 – 9 Jan 2010 was a British journalist who was, at the time of his passing, the defense correspondent for Sunday Mirror.

US Marines of 1st Battalion 3rd Marine Regiment honored Hamer in a battlefield ceremony at Forward Operating Base Geronimo, Nawa, Helmand Province Afghanistan, on 19 January.

Hamer, along with Philip Coburn (a Mirror colleague), flew to Afghanistan for their fifth assignment. They would spend a month reporting in the war zone. Coburn and Hamer were working with the US Marine Corps in Afghanistan in January 2010. Their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosion device (IED), near Nawa in Afghanistan’s Helmand region. Along with US Marine Cpl. Mark Juarez. The vehicle also sustained serious injuries to five other Marines and a colleague, Coburn.

Hamer attended Town Close School in Norwich, and Gresham’s School at Holt. He then joined the Eastern Daily Press in the late 1980s as a trainee journalist. He attended Leeds University in 1991, where he studied political science and edited “Rupert Hamer Friday”, a satirical column that appeared in the university’s newspaper the Leeds Student. After graduation, he was a health correspondent at the Bournemouth Evening Echo. He met Helen there and moved to London in 1997. He began his freelance career at the Sunday Mirror and the INS news agency, before being offered a job as a staff member by the newspaper. In 2004, he was named Sunday Mirror’s defense correspondent, reporting from both Afghanistan & Iraq.

At 18, the explosion marked the 18th death of a journalist in Afghanistan since 2001. It was the first time a British reporter had been killed in conflict. Hamer was also the first British journalist to die in warzones since Terry Lloyd’s death in 2003.
