Rui Marques is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on September 3, 1977 in Luanda, Angola. Marques joined Swiss club FC Baden after he had been through the youth ranks of Benfica’s Portuguese club. After his stint at Baden, Marques began his professional career in Germany’s SSV Ulm 1846 during the 1999-2000 season. After leaving Baden, he moved to Hertha BSC but didn’t play in any matches for the Bundesliga’s first team.
Marques, despite being eligible to play for Portugal’s national team, pledged allegiance the Angola he was born in. Marques was an Angola player in the 2006 World Cup. He played against Iran, Mexico and Portugal. Angola finished third in their group. Marques also participated in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. He was a part of all matches in Angola.
Marques was a regular starter in the first team and scored his first goal for Leeds on 18 August 2007 in the 4–1 drubbing of Southend United in the dying minutes of the match. Marques missed several matches in January 2008, joining the Angola national team for the 2008 African Cup of Nations.
Marques was eventually called up to the first team squad for Leeds’ 2–1 victory against Coventry City on 1 January 2007, where he turned in a solid performance at centre-back. This performance saw Marques being rewarded with a long run in the starting lineup at Elland Road. With questions mounting about whether his contract would be extended, Marques stated he would prefer to concentrate on Leeds’ relegation battle than signing a new deal. He was an instant hit with the fans. Despite some impressive performances, Marques’ efforts were not enough to save Leeds from relegation to League One for the first time in club history. Nonetheless, Marques showed his commitment to the club and signed a new contract on 7 August 2007.
Marques was a trial player at Ipswich Town before the 2005-06 season. His performance impressed Joe Royle and he decided to sign Marques permanently. Marques decided to transfer to Leeds United instead. Marques was signed by Kevin Blackwell as his manager, but he only made one appearance for Leeds United in the League Cup match against Oldham Athletic in 2005-06. He was clearly nervous and uncomfortable playing at right-back. Marques was not able to play for Leeds again that season. Clarke Carlisle, Matthew Kilgallon and Clarke Gregan were all ahead of him in terms of the pecking order. He joined Hull City as a temporary loanee towards the end of 2005-06. However, his loan was cut short by injury. He returned to Leeds. He represented Angola at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and was one of only two Leeds players to participate in that tournament. Eddie Lewis was the other for the United States.
