Paterson represented Scotland in the 2005 World Junior Curling Championships. He played third for the Logan Gray team. They lost to Canada in the semi- finals after finishing the round robin with an 8-0 record. After defeating the US in bronze, they settled for a bronze award.

On the tour, the team won the 2016 Karuizawa International and the 2017 Perth Masters. That season, Paterson also played alternate for Scotland at the 2017 World Men’s Curling Championship, finishing 7th, though he did not play in any games.
