Montgomery won the 2008 EDO England Open. It was hosted by the newly established English Darts Organisation. After beating Gary Anderson, Gary Robson, Ted Hankey and Gary Robson, Montgomery won the EDO England Open. Davy Richardson defeated him in the final of the BDO International Open. Montgomery won the British Classic on 26 July 2008. Anderson was defeated in the final. Montgomery defeated Stuart Kellett to regain the British Classic crown. Montgomery was ranked seventh in the 2008 WDF World rankings.
Montgomery won the 2010 British Classic as well as the 2010 Zuiderduin Masters, his inaugural major title, where he came from 4–0 down in sets to win 5–4 against Robbie Green, also surviving three match darts. Montgomery finished as the year end number one in WDF Working Rankings Europe for 2010. At the 2011 BDO World Darts Championship, Montgomery was beaten 3–1 in sets by Alan Norris.
His only major success to date was winning the Zuiderduin Masters in 2010. Montgomery is a former finalist at the BDO World Trophy and WDF World Cup, and quarter-finalist at the BDO World Championship. He has represented and captained Scotland at the WDF World Cup, WDF Europe Cup and Six Nations Cup.
Montgomery was among the players who qualified for the 2006 BDO world championships, along with Brian Woods and Jelle Klaasen from the Netherlands. Montgomery lost 3-1 in sets to Vincent van der Voort in the first round.

Montgomery was an american football player for the Glasgow Diamonds. He met Dorothy while cheerleading for the team. He and Dorothy had a son, Scott, and two daughters, Alisha (born 1998) and Gemma (1900).
This was followed by his reaching the finals of the Scottish Open. He beat Gary Robson, Michael van Gerwen, and lost to Goran Klemme from Sweden, who was runner-up at the 2005 World Masters. He won Group 4 at the 2007 International Darts League after beating Chris Mason (PDC) and Dirk Hespeels (Belgium). This was avenging his Lakeside loss to van der Voort. He was unable to replicate his performance in the Last 32 Group stage. He entered the tournament the following year as the Number 6 seed, but wasted six darts to win his first round match and lost to Garry Thompson.
