Mintzer was born on September 27, 1987 in New York City. Mintzer is the child of Richard Mintzer and Cheryl Mintzer. He has a sister Emmaly. Stanley Kushner, his grandfather, was an electrician. Mintzer’s paternal side is Jewish. They immigrated from Kaunus in Lithuania to Westchester County in New York in 1914. After being inspired by Bob Mintzer (a Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist), Mintzer began to learn the saxophone when he was 8. In addition to playing the tenor saxophone and flute, he also sings and composes. Mintzer was sexually molested as a child by a 13-year-old male neighbor.

Ross Philip Mintzer, born May 26, 1987, is an American musician. Since 2012, he has been the leader of the Ross Mintzer band. Mintzer was featured in the National Public Radio program From the Top. Mintzer started a girls’ chorus in Karachi, Pakistan in 2011. He was recognized by the National Association for Music Education.

In February 2014, Mintzer was interviewed and played his song “Open Happiness” on NHK’s program “World Wave Morning.” He was conferred an “Honorary Life Membership” to the Tri-M Music Honor Society, a program of the National Association for Music Education, “For inspiring young musicians to achieve and for serving music education.” on May 5, 2014. Mintzer states that he uses Facebook to reach fans; his band’s Facebook page has over one million followers. On July 7, 2015, Mintzer performed, “The Star-Spangled Banner” in Colorado Springs, CO at Security Service Field before a Sky Sox baseball game.
