He represented Scotland at the 2006 and 2002 Commonwealth Games. There he won a medal in team sprint riding with Chris Hoye and Craig MacLean. Edgar, who was supposed to represent Great Britain at the Team Sprint final in London 2012 Olympics was replaced and the team missed out on the Gold Medal.
Edgar signed for the IG Sigma Sport cycling team in December 2012. This added road racing to his membership of the Great Britain track cycling program. Edgar was elected to the Great Britain Olympic Podium Programme after the team pulled out of racing at the conclusion of the season. He switched from the sprint squad to the endurance team.
