Dame Rosalie Winterton DBE MP, was born 10 August 1958 and is a British Labour Party politician. In 1997, she was elected the first Member of Parliament (MP), for Doncaster Central. Winterton served as the Deputy Speaker of House of Commons since June 2017.

In 2001, she was a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in Lord Chancellor’s Department. She then became a Minister at the Department for Health. In June 2003, her responsibilities changed to Health Services. Her role was to oversee the April 2006 introduction of the NHS dental contract.

In June 2007, she was appointed Minister of State at the Department for Transport by the new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. Winterton was subsequently appointed Minister for Yorkshire and the Humber in addition to her DfT responsibilities on 24 January 2008. She was promoted to Minister of State for Pensions at the Department for Work and Pensions in the October 2008 reshuffle, retaining her Ministerial brief for Yorkshire and the Humber.

She served under Prime Minister Gordon Brown as the Minister for Work and Pensions from 2008 to 2009, and the Minister for Local Government from 2009 to

2010. She later entered the Shadow Cabinet in May 2010 as the Shadow Leader of the House of Commons.

Winterton was elected an MP in 1997. She represented the Doncaster Central Labour seat, which had a vote share of over 50%. Her vote share dropped to 39% in 2010, when it fell to 3.7%.

Winterton attended St Mary’s (now Hill House School in Doncaster), Ackworth School, an independent school, and Doncaster Grammar School at Thorne Road (now Hall Cross Academy). After graduating with a BA History degree from the University of Hull in 1979, she continued her studies at Ackworth School (an independent school), St Mary’s College (now Hill House School, Doncaster), and Doncaster Grammar School on Thorne Road (now Hall Cross Academy). From 1980 to 1986 she was John Prescott’s Constituency Personal assistant. She then worked for Parliamentary Officers for Southwark Council, for two years, until 1988, and then for the Royal College of Nursing for two more years, until 1990.

After four years working in the private sector as Connect Public Affairs’ Managing Director, she returned to politics in 1994 to help John Prescott. Prescott was elected as the Labour Party’s Deputy Leader. Winterton served as the Head of Office for the Deputy Party leader until 1997.

In June 2006, she was appointed a member of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council, and she was sworn in on 19 July 2006.
