Rosemary “Rosie” Kane (nee McGarvey), a politician of the Scottish Socialist Party, was born in Glasgow on 5 June 1961. She is also a former Member of Scotland’s Parliament for the Glasgow Region.

Kane was elected to the Scottish Parliament in 2003. She was second on the party list in the Glasgow region. She was elected along with Tommy Sheridan who was the first on that list. She stated in her victory speech how she intended to shake up Parliament. “They’re going be amazed at all of the madness and crazyness that’s happening there.”

In 2005, Kane accepted an invitation to meet Fidel Castro at a conference in Cuba. Later in 2005, she took part in an anti-nuclear protest, locking herself to a model of a nuclear submarine outside the Scottish Parliament building. She was fined £150 for the demonstration, and was imprisoned in Cornton Vale for 14 days in October 2006 after refusing to pay. In January 2007, she was arrested but not charged for taking part in a peaceful anti-nuclear demonstration at Faslane, as part of the Faslane 365 campaign.

Kane stood as the no. 1 candidate for her party on the Glasgow regional list for the 2007 Scottish Parliament election. The SSP polled 2,579 votes in the Glasgow region and failed to re-elect any candidates. Since September 2012, Kane has been involved in the Women for Independence campaign for Scottish independence. In April 2015, she organized a vigil in George Square in Glasgow in relation to the killing of Karen Buckley.

Kane was on Question Time with the SNP’s Alex Salmond and Labour MSP Cathy Jamieson. Kane also appeared alongside Tory MP Francis Maude, Peter Obourne from The Spectator. David Dimbleby, the host, described her contribution as “eloquent” and “intriguing”. According to the Scottish Sociist Voice, Kane was accused by the audience of being slow to condemn suicide bombers from Palestinians. She responded by saying that she “condemned all attacks against innocent people and emphasised Israel’s responsibility regarding non- negotiations during the ongoing conflict”.

Kane got involved in the campaign against the M77 extension and entered politics. She was the first candidate for the newly formed Scottish Socialist Alliance in 1996 when she ran in a Glasgow City Council By-election. This was in the Toryglen Ward, which is under threat from the M74 extension plan. Kane came third with 18%. She was a candidate for election several times with the Scottish Socialist Alliance, and later the Scottish Socialist Party. For a number years, she was a member of the party’s National Executive Committee. In June 2005, along with fellow socialist MSPs Carolyn Leckie, Frances Curran, and Colin Fox, she was suspended from the Scottish Parliament for the month of September for disrupting parliamentary proceedings in a peaceful protest in the chamber. They were highlighting the issue of the right to protest outside the Gleneagles Hotel, the site of the 31st G8 summit.
