Rosemarie Kuptana is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on March 24, 1954 in Sachs Harbour, Northwest Territories, Canada. Kuptana was born on the Prince of Wales Strait in 1954. Her parents, William Kuptana and Sarah Kuptana were seal hunters. They lived a nomadic life and moved to Sachs Harbour, Banks Island in 1958. Her father had come to the area to build the weather station.

Later, she joined the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation to be a production coordinator. She was elected president of the corporation in 1982. She remained there until 1988. She was responsible for ensuring that Inuktitut was used in all programs. She was also involved in standards and training programs. She was part of the establishment of Television Northern Canada, which later became the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.

In 1995, she became President of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference and co- chaired the Arctic Canadian panel which led up of the Arctic Council. She has also worked with the International Institute for Sustainable Development, the Migratory Bird Treaty and on Inuit residential school experience where she helped Inuit in receiving compensation.

In 1979, she was appointed radio broadcaster at CBC Northern Service. She reported on Inuvialuit issues. Her broadcasts in Inuvialuktun were heard all over the Western Arctic while she was at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Kuptana was involved in Inuit rights since 1975. In 1986, she was elected vice-chair of Canada’s Inuit Circumpolar Conference. This position she held until 1989. In 1991, she was elected chair of Inuit Tapirisat Canada, which is now Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. Kuptana, during constitutional discussions in Charlottetown, negotiated for Inherent Right of Inuit to be enshrined in Canada’s Constitution. She was close to winning.

In 1988, she became a Member of the Order of Canada and ten years later, in 1998, she was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada. She has received the Governor General’s Confederation Medal and in 1994, was given a National Aboriginal Achievement Award, now the Indspire Awards. In 2002, she received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and in 2012, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. She has also received honorary doctorates from Trent and York Universities.
