Aquilina was the daughter of a German mother and a Maltese father (a Urologist). Aquilina, who was stateless at the time, moved to the United States in 1959 with her family. She became a naturalized citizen at 12 years of age. Aquilina received her Bachelor of Arts in English and Journalism from Michigan State University in 1979, and her Juris Doctorate diploma from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing (now Western Michigan University Cooley Law School), in 1984.
Aquilina is an adjunct professor at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, where she teaches a variety courses. Cooley Law School awarded her the Griffen Award of Teaching Excellence. Aquilina is also an adjunct professor at Michigan State University College of Law. She teaches criminal and civil trial practice, trialpracticum, criminal procedure, and the LL.M. Aquilina also teaches classes in criminal and civil trial practice, trial practicum, criminal procedure in both the LL.M. programs. The College of Law Student Bar Association Adjunct faculty Award was presented to her for outstanding teaching. Aquilina ran in the 1990s for the Michigan Senate. Laura Baird was running for a seat on Michigan’s House of Representatives. Aquilina didn’t win. In 2004, she was elected to the 55th Michigan District Court. In November 2008, she was elected to the 30th Circuit Court of Ingham County. Aquilina sent an advisory memo to President Barack Obama in July 2013 after ruling that Detroit’s bankruptcy filing was against the state constitution. The Michigan Court of Appeals stayed the ruling less than a week later. One day later, the federal bankruptcy court issued a stop to all state court proceedings regarding the Detroit bankruptcy. This ordered that any legal challenge to the bankruptcy petition of the city be brought in federal bankruptcy court. Steven W. Rhodes, a bankruptcy judge, issued an opinion in December 2013 rejecting all federal and state constitutional challenges to Detroit’s bankruptcy. He allowed the city to proceed with the Chapter 9 bankruptcy process.
